About LuxuriaMusic
About LuxuriaMusic
LuxuriaMusic is an Internet Radio station that broadcasts out to the world from a small studio in Hollywood, Calif. While almost nine years old, the station’s programming concepts are both fresh and revolutionary, especially when compared with what’s going on in the prehistoric world of terrestrial radio.
What the listener hears upon tuning into LuxuriaMusic (luxuriamusic.com) is a meticulously curated mixture of musical genres that make up the station’s eclectic alchemy. Surf Music, Bossa Nova, Exotica, Space-Age Bachelor Pad, Jazz, Soft-Psych, Sunshine Pop, Wall of Sound, Latin, Go-Go, and Film & TV music of the past 50 years are expertly distilled and blended in order to concoct the “highly intoxicating and sometimes hallucinatory” LuxuriaMusic Sound. Somehow, in this context, it all makes sense.
This is entertainment for people who possess a high level of pop-culture consciousness. It’s for hipsters well-versed in both The Brady Bunch and The Wild Bunch; Nick at Nite and Playboy After Dark; Disneyland and DisPepsi; Josie & The Pussycats and Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
LuxuriaMusic airs three types of programming:
1. Live, interactive music shows hosted by DJs
2. Pre-taped shows by an international syndicate of DJs
3. Luxotron 5000: The station’s mascot, Luxotron is a virtual DJ/jukebox stocked with more than 8,000 songs
In addition to enjoying the fine music programming, a LuxuriaMusic listener can also interact with DJs and fans in our lively chat room. During live shows, the chat room fills up with people eager to discuss the music and/or any other topics. Friendships and romantic relationships have been cultivated in this virtual lounge.
LuxuriaMusic History
The origins of LuxuriaMusic can be traced to the Internet boom of the late 1990s, when a company called Enigma Digital was born. Bill Hein, one of the founders of Enigma Digital, brought Chuck Kelley on board to form an as-yet-undeveloped Internet radio station to go along with some other properties Enigma had recently acquired—KNAC.com and GrooveRadio.com. Kelley suggested that they recruit a friend from the East Coast, The Millionaire, and start a lounge station. Soon after, The Millionaire moved to Los Angeles and after some creative brainstorming, LuxuriaMusic was born. Live programming commenced on February 14, 2000.
Over the next 14 months, Kelley and The Millionaire continued developing LuxuriaMusic by bringing in talented people such as Eric Bonerz (Music Programmer), and a staff of over 25 volunteer DJs. During the next year, LuxuriaMusic not only made itself known for its refreshing music, but also for its legendary interviews. Brian Wilson and Al Jardine of the Beach Boys, Lalo Schifrin, Vic Mizzy, The Sherman Brothers, Van Dyke Parks and Stu Phillips all visited the LuxuriaMusic studio in that first year on the air. The station was soon mentioned in publications such as The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and TimeOut New York.
In April of 2001, the Internet boom was bottoming out and Clear Channel Communications purchased Enigma Digital in order to acquire some proprietary software the company had developed. Soon after, Clear Channel pulled the plug on LuxuriaMusic.
Almost two years later, the rights to LuxuriaMusic were acquired by Cliff Chase, a San Francisco-based entrepreneur. Chase didn’t have to do much pleading to get Kelley to restart the format. For the next three years, LuxuriaMusic was limited to playing taped-for-broadcast shows and jukebox programming that streamed from a computer set up in Chase’s garage. During this time, Chase and Kelley fought to keep the LuxuriaMusic fire burning with their infinite ingenuity and limited resources. Years passed as the dream of bringing LuxuriaMusic back to life as a live, 24/7 operation seem almost unattainable.
Then, in July 2006, a re-capitalization launched LuxuriaMusic into the next chapter of its history. A new studio was built and LuxuriaMusic resumed live broadcasting in August. In just a few short months, Bonerz, Kelley and Chase built a roster consisting of music business professionals, artists, composers, producers, DJs and historians that, as a collective brain trust, cannot be beat. See—no, listen—for yourself!
