Italian DJ/producer Nicola Conte's loungey brand of acid jazz relies extensively on bossa nova, but is also heavily influenced by the swinging soundtracks of Italian films in the '60s and '70s, plus touches of ethnic music and easy listening. Part of the loose-knit Fez collective of artsy acid jazz revivalists centered in the Italian town of Bari, Conte was a classically trained musician who instead moved into production and DJing, working with artists like the Paolo Achenza Trio, the Fez Combo, Balanco, Quintetto X, Rosalia de Souza and the Intensive Jazz Sextet. Conte also masterminded the Schema label, which gave many of those artists a home and cultivated a trademark, distinctly Italian approach to acid jazz. As for his own recording career, Conte scored an underground hit with his first single, "Bossa Per Due," which appeared on a variety of compilations and was licensed in the U.S. for an Acura commercial. Conte's first album to be released in America was also titled Bossa Per Due, a slightly reconfigured version of the Italian Jet Sounds; it appeared on Thievery Corporation's ESL (Eighteenth Street Lounge) label in the summer of 2001. The remix album Jet Sounds Revisited followed in late 2002. Two years later, Conte bowed on Blue Note's French subsidiary with an assured jazz date, Other Directions. In celebration of this weekend's big-deal Barry Gray centenary tribute concert in London, I, Tothar, present the second of my 2-part special edition of The Beyondophonic Action Hour focusing on the groovy Supermarionation and Century 21 soundtrack composer.

This week, on Nov. 16 at 7:00 pm Pacific / 10:00 pm Eastern, Part Two Part Two will focus on cover versions, remixes, and other Gray tributes, including a couple of recordings made especially for this program(!). You'll hear the Gray tones of Nelson Riddle, Joe Meek's Flee-Rekkers, Hank Marvin & The Shadows, Montefiori Cocktail, The Rezillos/The Revillos, Bang Bang Lulu, and MORE!

Monkees screening LA with Davy & Peter November 12, 2008

Hey, Hey! It's the 40th anniversary of the Monkees' only movie, Head. The American Cinematheque will present a special screening of the motion picture on November 12, 2008 at the Egyptian Theater on Hollywood Boulevard . The program, which will feature a brand new 35mm print of this seminal film, begins at 7:30 PM . Tickets are $10 and are available online from www.fandango.com or at the Egyptian Theater box office.

The evening's program will also feature the first ever theatrical presentation of the Monkees' Emmy award winning television series from rare 35mm versions of four episodes, as well as assorted Monkee film rarities (including a Make Friends With Kool Aid short). The episodes have been unseen in this form since 1973 and feature alternate soundtrack songs.

Monkees Davy Jones and Peter Tork will appear in person for a Q&A, alongside several of the people who made the Monkees series and film. These include: Bobby Hart (songwriter of "Theme From The Monkees," "Last Train To Clarksville," "Valleri" and "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone"); Steve Blauner (Columbia Pictures executive who green lighted The Monkees series and went on to produce such films as Drive, He Said and The King Of Marvin Gardens with Head writer and producer Jack Nicholson); Actress June Fairchild (who plays the jumper in Head and later appeared in such films as Cheech & Chong's Up In Smoke). Several other special guests will be announced soon.

Head's Hollywood premiere took place on November 19, 1968 at the Vogue Theater (located directly across the boulevard from the Egyptian, where the 40th anniversary screening is scheduled).

The American Cinematheque is a non-profit, viewer-supported cultural organization dedicated exclusively to the public presentation of the Moving Picture in all its forms. The Cinematheque presents the best of film and video - ranging form the classics to the outer frontiers of the art form.

Ennio Morricone Tribute Week on LuxuriaMusic

Ennio Morricone, the highly respected and influencial Italian film composer will celebrate his 80th birthday this Monday, November 10. The award winning “Maestro” who has written distinctive film scores for such films as Once Upon A Time In The West, The Good The Bad & The Ugly, Duck You Sucker, The Thing, The Mission and many others. He will soon be able to boast of another milestone - a week long tribute by LuxuriaMusic.com - arguably the world wide web's best radio station.

From Saturday November 8 to Saturday November 15, LuxuriaMusic will pay tribute to Morricone by adding mucho Morricone to the stations playlist rotation. In addition, many of LuxuriaMusic’s DJ’s will either be paying tribute by either playing brief sets or entire shows featuring music from Morricone’s extensive body of work.

Here’s a guide to some of the shows on LuxuriaMusic that will be airing Morricone tributes :

Wednesday, November 12, 6-7 PM*, Angel Baby and Doctor Nod get “Between The Sheets” with Ennio.

Friday, November 15, from 5 - 7 PM, On the KAOS-A-GO GO Show, Agent Kari will bust out some of the grooviest and most MOD Morricone dancefloor tracks. Get ready to shake your hips and move your feet!

Due to the overwhelmingly positive response to the last all-you-can-eat spaghetti buffet, we're laying off the cocktails for the next two weeks and getting back in the kitchen for more pasta!

Part 1 of the Morricone special focuses on the maestro's western scores... We'll be staying away from the more iconic Sergio Leone films for the most part, and exploring music from films by directors Sergio Corbucci, Damiano Damiani, Giulio Petroni, and more.

Bringing Morricone week to a close will be Thrifting for Tunes'

ENNIO MORRICONE SPECIAL - PART 2

Part 2 features a few Morricone scores for French and Italian crime thrillers of the 60s and 70s, as well as his work as a pop composer/arranger for such artists as Mina, Rita Monico, and Luigi Tenco.

Hola from Barcelona! Bubblegum & Other Delights will (hopefully) return live on Friday, Nov. 7, in its 7-9 time slot. Come celebrate the return of Becky and her new records, a la the fab Spanish version of "Sugar "Sugar" and the coveted Marc soundtrack (from Marc Bolan´s kids´s TV series).

The mini theme of this show will be volunteerism, and how we can spend as little as one hour per week making this country a better place--and how to find the right organization for you. I´ve seen many passionate people get turned off from volunteering due to bad organizations, lack of energy on the organizers´part, too much red tape, etc. Note: I pasted my volunteering tips into a reply below so we can have more rock/less talk tonite!
