Everly Brothers "Come To The Sunshine" Monday @ 4PM (PDT)

This Monday (July 14th 2008) "Come To The Sunshine" pays tribute to the fabulous Everly Brothers. Starting at 4PM (PDT) we will spin rare and wonderful recordings from Don & Phil's lost decade. All you've got to do is dream (and of course click on the Listen tab before picking a suitable stream)!

July 14th marks the 35th anniversary of Don & Phil fractious final performance at Anaheim California's Knott's Berry Farm. The preceeding ten years had been tough ones for the duo. Having opened the '60s with a bang - a million dollar recording deal with Warner Bros. and a #1 single called "Cathy's Clown" - everything seemed to go wrong.

They fell out with their manager/publisher Wesley Rose and were forced to record albums of show tunes and standards (so as not to use any of their fine originals, which he published). A mandatory stint in the Marine reserves sidelined their floundering musical fortunes. Drug addiction, suicide attempts, marriage and shock treatment (no joke) only added to their mounting woes.

But what about their music? In 1963 the brothers experienced a creative rebirth making extrodinary discs of folk rock, psychedelia and country. NO ONE LISTENED. 10 years on, when Phil Everly smashed his guitar on the stage of Anaheim's second biggest amusement park (ending the Everlys until their '80s reunion), few could dispute his anger and disappointment.

35 years later, the Everlys are still waiting to be heard. From the Mancini inspired "Nancy's Minuet" to the raga rock of "Her Name Is Melody" they covered more ground than any other fifties rockers. Listen out for the drug hazed "Mary Jane," or the fuzz drenched "I'm Finding It Rough" (co-written by Sex Pistols' producer Chris Thomas). Tracks from their Hollies inspired "Two Yanks In England" album will also get a spin alongside proto-garage faves "You're My Girl" and "The Price Of Love." Be my guest as I play more than an hour of studio gems, followed by a full hour of live and unissued concert recordings. Backed by a stellar band (including the legendary Jim Gordon - there's a whole story right there), hear the Everlys move through more two minute renditions of their hits than you could possibly imagine. We'll also get a glimpse into their hip nightclub routine of the late '60s.

Foreverly yours,

Andrew Sandoval
