While I was home sick with the flu last week, I was thrilled to finally get to see the 1968 AIP flick WILD IN THE STREETS for the first time (it was on Comcast On Demand). As I expected, it was a prime example of psychotronic film (plot: when voting age is lowered to 14, alleged rock star is elected President, whereupon he ships everyone over 35 to concentration camps where they're force-fed LSD). What I didn't expect, and was utterly tickled to discover, was a terrific soundtrack as well.
Three of the tracks (the movie's theme, "Psychedelic Senate," and "Shelley In Camp," the latter of which accompanied scenes of a freaking-out Shelley Winters shrieking that she "needs FEATHERS!") were actually contributed by Les Baxter! Plus most of the other tracks are credited to the team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, including the hit "Shape of Things To Come" (which has been running on an endless loop in my head since last Thursday, and which was recently used in a Target ad).
I promptly snagged a vinyl copy of the soundtrack from eBay -- can't wait till it arrives! I'd love to hear some of the tracks on Luxuria as well. I see Howie Pyro played one cut on an old Intoxica show during Soundtrack Week in 2007, but a single airing (webcasting? playing?) of a single track on a single occasion will not satisfy my craving. If the Carrie Nations can get regular play 'round these here parts, Max Frost and the Troopers deserve some Luxuriant love too.
